Totus Tuus Registration Our summer program, Totus Tuus, will be July 14 – July 19. Grades 1 – 6, July 15 – 19 Grades 7 – 12, July 14 – 18 May: $25.00 a child/$75.00 per family. June: $30.00 a child/$90.00 per family. Registration will be May 18th for 1 hour after the 5 PM Mass, May 19th after the 8 AM Mass until 1 hour after the Spanish Mass. Fat Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, the feast before the fast. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the forty days known as Lent. Every year, Christians highlight this penitential season as a time of self-examination, reformation of one's life, and continued development of a deeper spiritual life. The recommended practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving become the focus of Lenten activity and ritual. Each of these spiritual practices is aimed at personal discipline as well as continued concern for the other, especially the poor or alienated. Forty days is a symbolic biblical period of time, during which personal transformation occurs and out of which people surface as more spiritual, ready to carry out God's mission. Relying on God's providence and care, no matter how difficult life becomes, is crucial to Lenten spirituality. Fasting was initially stricter, permitting only one simple meal a day without meat, fish, or other delicacies. Such things were not even allowed in the house. In order to prepare for this in an age of no refrigeration, people gathered to consume whatever was not allowed during Lent. This led to parties or celebrations originally referred to as Carnivale, literally meaning "goodbye to meat," or Mardi Gras, literally meaning "Fat Tuesday." The eating and celebrating ended on the Tuesday just before Ash Wednesday. Today we focus more on moderation in all things. If you have already been contacted and responded to the scammers, don't hesitate to contact the police for assistance, especially if they have asked you to do anything unusual, such as buying gift cards, sending money, or making donations to an email or phone number. When the scammers ask you to buy the gift cards, they will ask you to scratch off the back and send a picture of it to them. DON'T DO THIS – As soon as you do, you have no way of getting your money back. We would all jump at the chance to help Father Emmet and Father James out in a heartbeat. November 2nd, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, dovetails with November 1st, the feast of All Saints. The saints, our models of Christian living, are one with God in heaven. All the faithful departed are those who have died with hope and trust in a loving God who calls us to greater growth and development, even beyond death. This growth and development occurs in a state of being that we have traditionally called purgatory. While the Western Church has emphasized the cleansing and purifying nature of purgatory, the Eastern Orthodox Church has emphasized the growth and development aspect of it. Today, belief in purgatory allows one who has died in Christ to continue growing and developing before meeting God face to face. God continually invites communion with these loved ones, but some feel the need to continue growing and developing before entering into full communion with God. These November feasts vividly remind us of the rich reality known as the communion of saints. This belief stresses the strong affirmation that the church is always one in Christ. Death does not sever any of the bonds that unite us in Christ. That is why it is a fitting practice to pray for the dead and to ask them to pray for us. Just as we do that for each other when we are alive, so, too, do we continue that bond and concern for each other even beyond death. LPi ©
