Fat Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, the feast before the fast. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the forty days known as Lent. Every year, Christians highlight this penitential season as a time of self-examination, reformation of one's life, and continued development of a deeper spiritual life. The recommended practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving become the focus of Lenten activity and ritual. Each of these spiritual practices is aimed at personal discipline as well as continued concern for the other, especially the poor or alienated. Forty days is a symbolic biblical period of time, during which personal transformation occurs and out of which people surface as more spiritual, ready to carry out God's mission. Relying on God's providence and care, no matter how difficult life becomes, is crucial to Lenten spirituality. Fasting was initially stricter, permitting only one simple meal a day without meat, fish, or other delicacies. Such things were not even allowed in the house. In order to prepare for this in an age of no refrigeration, people gathered to consume whatever was not allowed during Lent. This led to parties or celebrations originally referred to as Carnivale, literally meaning "goodbye to meat," or Mardi Gras, literally meaning "Fat Tuesday." The eating and celebrating ended on the Tuesday just before Ash Wednesday. Today we focus more on moderation in all things. If you have already been contacted and responded to the scammers, don't hesitate to contact the police for assistance, especially if they have asked you to do anything unusual, such as buying gift cards, sending money, or making donations to an email or phone number. When the scammers ask you to buy the gift cards, they will ask you to scratch off the back and send a picture of it to them. DON'T DO THIS – As soon as you do, you have no way of getting your money back. We would all jump at the chance to help Father Emmet and Father James out in a heartbeat. November 2nd, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, dovetails with November 1st, the feast of All Saints. The saints, our models of Christian living, are one with God in heaven. All the faithful departed are those who have died with hope and trust in a loving God who calls us to greater growth and development, even beyond death. This growth and development occurs in a state of being that we have traditionally called purgatory. While the Western Church has emphasized the cleansing and purifying nature of purgatory, the Eastern Orthodox Church has emphasized the growth and development aspect of it. Today, belief in purgatory allows one who has died in Christ to continue growing and developing before meeting God face to face. God continually invites communion with these loved ones, but some feel the need to continue growing and developing before entering into full communion with God. These November feasts vividly remind us of the rich reality known as the communion of saints. This belief stresses the strong affirmation that the church is always one in Christ. Death does not sever any of the bonds that unite us in Christ. That is why it is a fitting practice to pray for the dead and to ask them to pray for us. Just as we do that for each other when we are alive, so, too, do we continue that bond and concern for each other even beyond death. LPi ©

Since November 24, 1953, Saint Stephen Catholic Church has been run by the priests from the Irish Pallottine Fathers (Society of the Catholic Apostolate), the Mother of Divine Love Province. Our new activities center will be named after the founder, St Vincent Pallotti. Over the past 75 years, the Pallottines have generously served this incredible parish! The new Pallottine Building will be a second home where our youth ministry, adult ministries, and organizations will have a place to gather. Pallottine will be a multi-purpose facility to host our parish-wide events, such as the Fall Fiesta or Cinco de Mayo, with indoor and outdoor event spaces, and will meet the needs of all our parish organizations. Parishioners will have the opportunity to enjoy Pallottine for wedding receptions, quinceañeras, fundraisers, and more. Although we are close to our groundbreaking goal, we need your help to move forward. All donations and pledges in any amount are welcome, and every single dollar will help us succeed in our pursuit to make Pallottine the space that this growing parish urgently needs. In November, our parish will celebrate 75 years of the Pallottine Fathers here at St. Stephen. The Rector General, Fr. Zenon Hanas, and the Vice-Rector General, Fr. Derry Murphy, will travel from Rome and will make a pastoral visit to our parish on the first weekend of November. While in years past, the Quo Vadis retreat has focused primarily on discernment to the priesthood, this years’ retreat will cover more specifically what it means to grow into a Catholic Man in today’s world. The retreat will involve talks from seminarians and priests, mass and adoration, as well as time for games and sports. Young men will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss the following topics: • Learning to pray well. • Learning the importance of sacrifice, suffering and fortitude. • Growth in virtue and discipline. If you are a high school man looking to grow in these areas, while also getting to know our seminarians and priests, please come to this retreat.

The Stillness of Holy Saturday Holy Thursday brings us the Last Supper. On Good Friday, we exalt the cross and commemorate the death of Jesus. On Easter Sunday, we celebrate! But what about the day in between? Between death and life, the time holds its breath. For the first disciples, Holy Saturday was a day of silence, sorrow, and waiting. But redemption is already beginning! Jesus descends to the dead and frees righteous souls awaiting eternal life. On our own Holy Saturdays, we too wait in silence. But it is not the silence of disappointment and confusion. It is the silence of anticipation. Soon and very soon, dawn will alight on the horizon, and the stone will be rolled back. Until then, we wait in stillness. La quietud del Sábado Santo El Jueves Santo nos trae la Última Cena. El Viernes Santo, exaltamos la cruz y conmemoramos la muerte de Jesús. ¡El Domingo de Pascua, lo celebramos! Pero, ¿qué pasa con el día intermedio? Entre la muerte y la vida, el tiempo contiene la respiración. Para los primeros discípulos, el Sábado Santo era un día de silencio, dolor y espera. ¡Pero la redención ya está comenzando! He came to set us free. He came to take our sins away. He came to bring us a love that truly satisfies us. This is the love of God, who gives Himself totally for us. Not to make us feel guilty or inadequate, but that we might receive what He comes to give us. In return, He does not want our hopelessness, our despair, our self-condemnation. In return, He wants us to give Him our sins, not so that He can hold them over our heads, but so that He can overcome them, destroy them, wipe them away, and make us free, joyful, and at peace. Jesus dies on the Cross as our merciful Saviour. Jesus comes to give Himself to us, for us. The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him “carry his cross.” These opportunities aren’t usually big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for them. The key is putting the other person’s needs before our own and not expecting anything in return. El Señor nos llama a amar a Dios y a nuestro prójimo. Cada día se nos presentan oportunidades para amar a nuestro prójimo y ayudarlo a “cargar su cruz”. Esas oportunidades no son usualmente grandes eventos, son usualmente situaciones ordinarias como ayudar a alguien a llevar las compras o mantenerles la puerta abierta.
